What is ECP, ERA, EFT, ACH....

Electronic Claims Processing in the dental industry is full of acronym's that can make it a bit confusing. To help clear things up, take a look at what's involved and services to make insurance processing easier.

ECP: Electronic Claims Processing
A means to get your claims to a payer without submission of a paper claim.

EDI: Electronic Data Interchange
Transfer of information and electronic processing using a standard format.

837D: Electronic Dental Claim
HIPAA Standard dental claim transaction (what happens behind the scenes for electronic claims).

Clearinghouse: XLDent utilizes a clearinghouse (Change Healthcare) to connect healthcare providers and payers.

ERA: Electronic Remittance Advice
These are considered the electronic version of your EOB (Explanation of Benefits). They are provided by the Insurance Carrier (usually through a Clearinghouse), and provide an explanation of claim payments and benefits.

EFT: Electronic Funds Transfer
This service puts funds directly into a banking account, rather than mailing a paper check. It's the electronic transfer of money from one account to another.

ACH: Automated Clearing House
This is a "batch" process that is used to transfer funds between bank account, and is widely used in the U.S. The ACH Network serves as a safe, high-quality electronic payment system (best known for Direct Deposit and Direct Payment).

NACHA: Private sector rule-making organization that administers the ACH Network. They are the standards organization for the healthcare EFT standard.
